The Fifth Element
Wednesday, April 20
7:30 10 12:30

Do you like sci-fi? Do you like Bruce Willis? Do you like crazy half-naked redheads who can?t speak English? The Fifth Element, as it happens, is a fantastic example of all three of these. It also has kick-ass special effects, Gary Oldman being, well, Gary Oldman, and Chris Tucker as a loud, obnoxious, and ambiguously male DJ. And it?s widely regarded as one of the great modern sci-fi classics. So go see it!

[ITAL]Mar AdentroITAL

In a somewhat interesting twist, this movie, which is based on the true story of one man (played by Javier Bardem) fighting for the right to euthanize, was selected weeks before the issue of euthanization came into the public eye thanks to Terry Schiavo. Unfortunate timing aside, [ITAL]Mar Adentro[ITAL]'s masterful direction and acting keep it balancing on the lines between heart-wrenching drama, dark suspense, artsy love story, and balls-out comedy. Since the movie is not in English, it's even harder to understand!

[ITAL]In Good Company[ITAL]

Very few movies star an actor with as hilarious a name as Topher. Topher Grace, best known for his starring role on [ITAL]That '70s Show[ITAL], plays a fresh-out-of-college CEO who has eyes for the daughter of one of his subordinates. Hijinks and hilarity ensue, and I'm sure several valuable lessons are learned. Scarlett Johansson is really hot, as usual, and Dennis Quaid is adorably confused. All generality aside, this movie was supposed to be one of the more creative and clever movies from 2004, and should be fun to watch. Assuming that you can even watch the movie at all ? the projector in McConomy caught on fire last week and things are spotty. Keep it in mind.

[ITAL]Meet the Fockers[ITAL]

The sequel that almost never was, [ITAL]Meet the Fockers[ITAL] was stalled in production for four years. This followup to the smash hit [ITAL]Meet the Parents[ITAL] ended up finally coming out during the 2004 Christmas season. It stars Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand as eccentric Ben Stiller's equally eccentric parents. The story is the same, except now it's flipped: the uptight Robert DeNiro has to deal with his daughter's crazy new in-laws. Retaining all the original actors and director, all you can expect is more of the same from the first film ? so at least you will know if you find Ben Stiller funny.

[ITAL]The Big Sleep[ITAL]
8 10 12

AB Sunday Films goes old-school this week, with the classic 1946 crime thriller [ITAL]The Big Sleep[ITAL]. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, this movie is one of the founding films of the noir genre, and it was made back when movies were actually works of art. Unfortunately, being a work of art is directly in opposition with the rise of astonishingly low attention spans ? there will be precious few shootouts and explosions in [ITAL]The Big Sleep[ITAL], and no color, either. Just good old-fashioned moviemaking.
