  • Predictive policing in Pittsburgh

    This past June, it was announced in a Carnegie Mellon University press release that a fire prevention algorithm developed by Michael Madaio, a Ph.D. student in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute, would be adopted by the City of Pittsburgh. However, the algorithms’ potential did not stop there for city officials. They hoped similar predictive models could be applied to policing.

  • School of Computer Science Dean Andrew Moore leaves for unknown opportunity

    Carnegie Mellon University’s Andrew Moore, Dean of the School of Computer Science (SCS), announced that he would be stepping down from his position on Aug. 28, after serving as Dean since 2014. Dean Moore will pursue “a new professional opportunity,” as told in a Carnegie Mellon University press release, after finishing the calendar year as Dean.

    Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science announced that a new artificial intelligence (AI) major will be launched this year, the first undergraduate major specific to AI among United States universities.

  • Non-artificial intelligence confers about ethical issues in AI

    On April 9 and 10, the inaugural K&L Gates Conference on Ethics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) sought to bring to light some of the prevailing issues that surround artificial intelligence, including “effects on the workforce, social justice, fairness, privacy and many other sectors of society,” as the conference website states.
