Women's tennis wins last home games of year

Men’s Tennis

The 22nd-ranked Division III men’s tennis team took on Division I Duquesne University at home on Thursday, April 13.

Though all three Tartan doubles teams fell to their opponents, the team of junior Derek Wong and first-year Akshay Joshi forced a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 8-7 (7-5). Senior Matthew Poh earned his 10th singles victory and the first point for the Tartans in the third spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Carnegie Mellon’s other point came from sophomore Chaitanya Irkar, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in the sixth singles. Overall, the Tartans lost 7-2 to their Division I opponent.

On Saturday, April 15, the team traveled to Cleveland to take on Case Western Reserve University, the number one-ranked team in Division III.

In doubles play, all three Tartan pairs lost, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead heading into singles. Poh once again scored the Tartan’s first point of the day, this time in the fourth spot, 6-4, 6-3. In the sixth spot again, Irkar earned the second Tartan point in a third set super breaker, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 14-12. Once again, the Tartans fell 7-2 to their opponent.

These losses have put the men’s tennis team at 6-8 this season. They will next be playing in the UAA Championship on Friday, April 21. The draw for the tournament is set to be released by Monday, April 17.

Women’s Tennis

The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team hosted Allegheny College and Division I Duquesne University on Sunday, April 16 for their final home matches of the season.

To open their match against Allegheny College, the Tartans earned all three doubles points. The team of junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou swept 8-0 in the first spot, first-years Manuela Van Cotthem and Divya Venkatarama won 8-3 in the second spot, and sophomore Zoe Angell and first-year Anna Chow went 8-1 in the third spot.

In singles play, the Tartans also claimed all the points. Most Tartans won their sets 6-0, 6-1, or 6-2. As such, the Tartans ended 9-0 against Allegheny.

In their second match of the day, Tartans took home two points in doubles play. Taylor and Zhou won in the first spot 8-7 (7-4) while Angell and Chow won in the third spot 8-5. The Tartans took home five more points in singles play. Highlights include Van Cotthem sweeping 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth spot while Venkatarama went 7-5, 6-1 in the fifth spot. Overall, the Tartans went 7-2 over Duquesne, snapping their 10-game losing streak against Duquesne.

These wins have put the women’s tennis team at 17-4 in dual matches this season. They will next be playing in the UAA Championship on Thursday, April 20. The draw for the tournament is set to be released by Monday, April 17.

Men’s track and field

The men’s track and field team hosted the Carnegie Mellon Last Chance meet on Thursday, April 13 at Gesling Stadium. Competitors from Chatham University, Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, and Point Park University were in attendance.

In the 1,500-meter race, senior Zachary Nowak won with a time of 4:07.86 — his first time competing in the event in his collegiate career. In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Thomas Rich placed second with a time of 15.118. Sophomore Sean Dutton finished second with a time of 1:55.24 in the 800-meter run. In the 400-meter race, first-year Gaven Williams placed third with a time of 49.51.

In the high jump, sophomore Sebastian Sanso cleared the bar at 1.86 meters, earning him first. He placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.12 meters. In the pole vault, sophomore Casey Potrebic cleared 4.30 meters, winning the event; first-year Christian Duckworth also cleared 4.30 meters, but placed second via judges' decision. Potrebic also placed second in the javelin throw, throwing 50.92 meters. In the discus throw, graduate student Bram Miller threw 47.45 meters, earning second. Sophomore Cody Breidenbach threw 54.03 meters in the hammer throw, earning second as well. In shot put, senior Bailey O’Malley and first-year Sam Alligood took second and third, respectively, with marks of 16.23 meters and 14.42 meters.

The team will next be competing at the University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships on April 22 and April 23 at the University of Chicago.

Women’s track and field

The women’s track and field team also hosted several local colleges at the Carnegie Mellon Last Chance Meet on Thursday, April 13.

Senior Liz Barre placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best of 14.51. Junior Isabella Rhee placed third in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.68. In the 800-meter run, first-year Jacqueline Liu earned third place with a time of 2:17.85. Senior Samantha Giordani finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.88.

Junior JoJo Huczko took first in the pole vault after she cleared the bar at 3.25 meters. In the long jump, first-year Iniyaa Mohanraj took second with a mark of 5.07 meters. In the triple jump, sophomore Jocelyn Kiefel took third with a mark of 10.72 meters. Senior Ola Owodunni placed fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.97 meters.

The team will next be competing at the University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships on April 22 and April 23 at the University of Chicago.
